Why Is HRC Hanging In There?
Three possibilities:
1. She believes she can still win. The Clintons have been written off and yet rebounded so many times (Bill Clinton’s reelection to Governor of Arkansas after the 1980 loss, the Jennifer Flowers crisis in the 1992 New Hampshire primary, the 1996 reelection victory after the debacle of 1994, the rise in Bill Clinton’s post-presidential stature after Monica and Marc Rich, to name only a few) that they may have internalized a “comeback kid” mentality. They really believe Obama will make a terrible mistake between now and the Convention, or a skeleton will come out of his closet, or Gore will decide to support her, or some other event will tip enough super-delegates her way to give her a fighting chance at the Convention.
2. She wants to establish herself for a 2012 run, if Obama loses to McCain or if Obama proves to be such an unpopular president that the Democrats look for another standard-bearer. In this view, her tenacity throughout this race and her almost-win, coupled with the story she can credibly tell about her appeal to “Reagan Democrats” and the white working class, will make her the logical next choice. Even if she has to wait for 2016, she’s still young enough to be the rightful Democratic heir.
3. She wants the best possible deal she can strike with Obama. She wants Obama to agree to pay her campaign debts, to seat the Michigan and Florida delegations (so she can claim a moral victory), and – the quietest deal of all – a personal commitment from him to appoint her to the Supreme Court when the next vacancy occurs.
My view? Some of all three. But she and her husband are also smart enough to know they’re fast approaching a tipping point, after which time #1 is a complete delusion, #2 is more difficult to achieve because she will be perceived as having endangered the chances not just of Obama but of congressional Democrats seeking to solidify their House majority and also gain sixty votes in the Senate, and #3 become less likely because she’s at her maximum bargaining strength now and is about to lose it (consider Edwards’ endorsement today.)

I'm a bit more cynical. I think HRC knows she is going to lose, but she is intentionally doing as much damage to Obama as she can (albeit under the guise of trying to win the Democrat nomination) to help ensure that he loses to McCain. This puts her in a better position to run in 2012 - no incumbent Democrat, and Obama tainted with a presidential campaign loss.

This isn't an unreasonable thing to believe: until a few days ago, the latest polls in FL, PA and OH showed Clinton well ahead of McCain in those 3 states and Obama losing slightly to McCain in each of them. (Very recently, though, the latest polls in PA show Obama beating McCain by almost as much as Hillary would there.) And, if you look at the breakdown of electoral votes, it'll be pretty much impossible for a Democrat to beat McCain if they lose those 3 states. Of course, she presumably also figures that it's her responsibility to attack Obama as fiercely as possible, precisely in order to find out whether, once he's been strongly attacked, he won't poll as well against McCain as she does. So she's doing us all a service, bless her heart.
Now, personally, I'm hopeful that Obama will start polling much better once (1) Hillary drops out and starts praising him instead of sniping at him and (2) we see some one-on-one debates between Obama and McCain. And I expect that Obama will be our next President. But I can also understand Hillary's feeling like, as of now, she's our only chance to avoid a President McCain in 2009.

Given that we haven't even touched the beginnings of the recession and the 3 Trillion housing crisis, whoever wins the election in 2008 will be a one-term candidate only; taxes will have to be raised, and spending cut, across the board. Not to mention, withdrawal from Iraq will be impossible in the short term. "Quitter" is not something she wants on her resume for 2012.
I really don't remember 'Reagan Democrats' when I think back to those days. Wasn't the popular vote 1980 pretty close between Carter and Reagan? But the electoral vote was a landslide, of course.

Why need HRC be considered the logical choice for 2012 or 2016? Assuming of course Obama doesn't beat McCain, or beats him and we somehow wish he hadn't.
This primary season has showcased several women Democrats 50+ whose qualifications and experience smartly exceed hers, so it's not as if the only "serious" woman were herself. I just don't understand the claim she has to be considered first in 4 or 8 years.
I cannot be alone in thinking she should suck it up and be the best senator she has it in her to be. Of course, I am not thinking what would be good for HRC -- only of what would be good for the rest of us. How did we get in a position to even contemplate whether this nepotistic candidate is owed another shot at the presidency -- in 4 years or 8 years or ever? And why is she owed a bigger consolation prize than others who do not gain the nomination of their parties? Is it not she who should be trying to mend fences now, rather than every Obama supporter lining up to buy her off?
I'm so sorry she's a revenant who can't seem to leave the scene of the trauma, but she has lost my vote in perpetuity.
Hillary already knows she's going to lose. She can see it as well as anyone else. She's staying in to get votes because that builds the Clinton's personal power. She wants to appear as formidible as possible going forward. She's not the least worried about being cast as a spoiler. It's about power.
HRC has become a much stronger campaigner in the recent month. Had she that vigor and confidence at the outset of her campaign, she would handily have won the nomination by now. Obama would have been proven a rookie to nuanced road to the presidency.
She was extremely slow at the gate having paid too much attention to pundits as well members in her camp that wrote off Obama as a viable candidate. Inasmuch as the Clinton's did fight for the black community, the measure of condescension they hold for the community is no longer secret. I wouldn’t dismiss her belief that America would more likely elect a woman than to elect an African American to the presidency. When considering that the African American has less experience and she was a woman of society, the equation, she felt was heavily in her favor. In the wake of the New Hampshire primaries the cockiness in President Clinton’s victory address was more apparent than a peacock.
Having found her voice late in the campaign, she now, can only await troublesome news on Obama to capsize his ship for good. Without sounding too cynical, can we really dismiss the possibility that Wright is being pursued for more grave disclosure to scare off the ‘white’ voting public? Can we truly dismiss the possibility some concocted effort by Congresswoman Wasserman Shultz to cause some brouhaha down in Florida that would seat all her delegates in what she calls a ‘win’ in the state’s illegal primary? She is awaiting Wright to prove Obama wrong for the nomination. What Wright would need to do is merely prove that Obama is complicit with his view of America. That is all that is needed right now. A conversation, a letter, something that would prove he is a militant black man masquerading as a unifier. It would also prove him a liar.
In such a scenario, given her strong finish, party leaders would have good reason for pause about an Obama ticket. To quell the rancor in the black community, she would then broker a VP spot for Sen. Obama.
So, I agree with your first scenario Rob. They are delusional about this comeback kid thing, couching their success on Obama making a terrible mistake between now and the Convention.
HRC will not go away, because she flatly believes she is entitled to be treated like part of "dynasty" created by Bill.
She has showed that with all her so called experience she is $20 million in debt-- cannot even manage her own campaign, but is to be trusted to run the country.
Supported Bill during both bids for the presidency, and would not support another Clinton for the rest of my voting life. She has done tremendous damage to other good women out there-- who without question as more savvy at winning friends and " influencing" people.
As a female, if that is best women can produce after all our complaining/rants about being left out of the process-- then it is time to shut up. HRC through this long,protracted race has shown me who she really is, and government is not where she belongs... out there somewhere where bringing people together is not a goal. In short, she belongs-- on Mars. Fight and cuss forever!!
If she is causing so much harm in order to bargain whatever she believes she is bargaining, I sure hope the Democrats remember her behavior the next time around. If not, well, people deserve what they get, and so do parties... and yes, so do nations.
If she is in denial, or if she truly believes she is entitled to the presidency, then God forbid that a person with such psychological traits be ever elected! Or appointed!
To the matter of Florida. I live in Florida. My whole family supports Obama. ON the day of the primaries WE DID NOT GO TO VOTE BECAUSE WE WERE TOLD IT WOULD NOT COUNT!!!!
And finally about her appeal to the working class. It is beyond me how a multimillionaire can identify with the working class. I can't help remembering Evita Peron, jewelry rattling, bank accounts overflowing, the mink coat protecting her from the night’s chill, looking the poor Argentinians in the eye and telling them “I am one of you.”
I have always believed that Hillary appealed to the stupidity in us. The mote the superdelegates behave in what they think is a “politically correct” way and wait silently, the more they look like her.
I'll guess that until recently she actually thought she'd win over the super-delegates; she just thinks she's a better candidate and she could justify going to any length for that reason.
I also think that Hillary and Bill have unrealistic expectations regarding public support, thanks to their prior recoveries from scandal.
She projected every possible negative as a campaigner (no I don't blame the media or KOS kids), so Obama had it easy... he played Mr. Nice Guy.

Don't these judges need to be seen as honest people with high integrity? People would always be wondering about the integrity of her decisions. Never happen. You'd think that Obama would have higher standards than this anyway.
btw: The Clintons had their time in the 90's. This is her last chance for the presidency. The newer generation always looks forward not backward. It doesn't matter how many times she reinvents herself she's soon to be a relic of the past. She has a future with regional politics, i.e., Senator, but nothing much beyond this. She's too untrustworthy and seen by larger swaths of voters as too obsessed with power. Someone like her only gets one bite of the apple.
Consider Hillary's self-proclaimed strenghth: she appeals to uneducated white voters. While my sympathies are with such people, many of whom reside in rural areas and who lack opportunities, what a revealing statement about the appeal of her candidacy. How has American culture come to this pass, where some of us elevate an appeal to the ignorance others as a point of pride?
And, how terrible is it that the candidate seeking to appeal to the 'working man' has made 110 million dollars in the last eight years...
I think there's a racism card at play here. Not that HRC is a racist. But rather I believe there is skepticism among the DLCC and other establishment Democrats that America will elect an African American. I don't think you can overestimate the depth of hidden racism in this country.
Hillary has been picked to be beaten by McCain.
That's why Rush Limbaugh has been asking Republicans to switch sides in the primaries and vote for her.
If it's Hillary vs. McSame in November, then Republican voters will be motivated to go out and vote against her.
I believe that there is a fear that they won't be as motivated, to get out of the lazy boy and go out to vote against Obama.
Either way, I believe that McCain will be our next President. An increase in the war effort, can provide more scapegoats for our leadership to blame our economic woes on.
As gasoline prices continue to rise, our politicians will need foreign scapegoats so that they won't be expected to accept any responsibility.
An increase in the war effort will also lead to more war profiteering. It will allow us to continue to increase the rate at which the M3 is increasing. It will help to provide cover to keep financial institutions solvent with Federal Welfare Checks, undersigned by the taxpayers.
With McCain as president, we won't get off the path that Bush put us on.

If Obama were to win, he might attempt to change our economic policies, thus rocking the boat.
Borrowing and giving away ever increasing quantities of money is the only tool in our government's toolbox. It is evidently leading the USA in the direction that our leadership desires.
Bush once told us, "I know exactly where I want to lead this country." And he has made it clear that he believes that he has been a very successful president. He has accomplished the goals he set for himself.
So we can now look around and see where he has lead us, and where we continue to be headed. Our owners have laid in this course and I do not believe that they will take any chances with a president that might want to chart a different course.

It's not so much a racism card but an uninformed card. When you have the main stream media only giving you their version of events or even just being selective on what they report, it's truth be damned, I'm not surprised in the least that some still think Senator Obama is a Muslim.
The "he can't win over white voters" has been debunked, the "record turnout" in Michigan and Florida has been debunked and as far as racism goes, it seems to be an eastern states thing. Exit polls show this sort of issue far more on the east coast than the west coast.
What also has been debunked and allows me to say that I wouldn't even elect her for dog catcher is that she hasn't been thoroughly vetted already.
Her ties to Jack Abramoff and the Tans, the lack of transparency with the Clinton Library and many, many other concerns, the Republicans would annihilate her in November.
I want her gone now before her and her husband do further damage to a decent man and to the Democratic Party. I don't vote for liars and frauds.

Hillary knows any Democrat will win in November ... she is fully aware of Obama's weaknesses, his thin resume, his fecklessness, his narrow grasp of foreign affairs and economics. This is the general election, the Democratic primary season.
People here are sick of Republicans. Why? Iraq is the short answer, but only partly the reason. Economists ought to know: the rich continually get richer while the rest hang on by their fingertips. People watch whatever American dream they favor get priced out of reach and they naturally see the Republicans as the reason.
By excluding the Democrats from all decision making in the past 7 years, the GOP has nobody to blame but themselves.

Very astute post for the most part. I have felt and posted such, that the inital strategy laid out by Hillary and her handlers is why she is not the presumptive nominee by a large margin at this point.
The strategy was predicated on the idea that she was likely the strongest in the field, based on experience, name recognition and access to money. My first choice was Joe Biden but he lacked the latter two ingredients. This strategic error lead to keeping her real personna under wraps. As her personality has emerged she has become a much more viable candidate. She has become far more than just Mrs. Bill Clinton. Alas, too late.
It is interesting all the vehement outpouring on here regarding Hillary. And the same posters profess this exalted faith in Obama with very little in the way of history to substantiate his bona fides. This whole idea of her sense of entitlement is a media phenomenon never supported by any facts or actions.
It is unfortunate but condecension for blacks has been prevalent in the Democratic party for years. The Clintons didn't originate it nor, in my opinion, are they staunch practicers of it.
As shameful as it is, there is a serious question as to whether the voting public will elect a black man to the presidency. Although there is no clear evidence either way, his successes seem to argue that it could happen. On the other hand, I suggested earlier that as of now he has roughly 25% support from the voting public. No doubt he will pick up many, if not most, of Hillary's supporters, but her support from white, non-college graduate working class folks represents a segment of Democrats most likely to have some racist views.
Whether she has any opportunities awaiting her in 2012 or 2016 is unknown at this point but it sure doesn't make sense to shoot yourself in the foot today and obliterate any chances later. She certainly seems lately to be increasing her support, not losing it.
The American psyche is interesting. We revel in the fantasy of "Rocky" not because he eventually wins, but because he doesn't give up. Beaten to a pulp he fights on and triumphs. We don't seem to find that admirable unless it is pure fantasy or a sporting event.

As the voting machine manufacturers are involved in the Republican Party, i believe that there is a real risk that the machines will vote Republican in November.

Compound this with BUSH's idioctic declaration yesterday before the Israel Kenesset that Obama and the Democrats are behaving like the APPEASERS who wanted to negotiate with HITLER. Then you realize how dangerous, almost hopeless, a situation we live in today and how decadent our political U.S. system has become. We Americans are doing our very best to help the victims in Myanmar as a cowboy President is spuriously attacking a possible future President of the U.S. during a visit in a foreign land. How low can we go?

I do not get the argument that he is inexperienced in comparison to her. I believe he has served two terms in the state senate as well. But this not the point. According to the prerequisite of "experience," only the vice presidents would qualify. And the secretaries of state.
As for foreign policy he is far more qualified because he has lived abroad and he has learned to look onto America through the eyes of those who live outside. From that prespective he is far more capable in handling foreign affairs.
Anyway, here is what I heard from a young guy, who worked in my house yesterday and said he would vote for Obama. I asked him why and he sad "he appears wiser than the others. He makes me think."

It gets very intereting after the fourth minute so be patient. can you envision a world with millions of different cultures and languages, cultures not based on lies, constantly being created anew, coming from true humanity? and a true, healthy relationship between males, females, and two-spirits? where everyone is extremely healthy, everybody is there's no loss of memory and thus our true humanity, and very little disease?

They've passed that point. Bill's rantings about how the Republican Party is "more progressive than the Democratic Party," and Hillary's pathetic "working Americans, hard working Americans, you know white Americans," comment burned the village on their way out of town. There's no way they can win the nomination again. Say Obama loses in 2008. Say Mark Warner gives it a shot in 2012--Warner would have 85% of the black vote three seconds after he announced if it was him vs. Hillary. They're fighting so hard because this is their last, best chance at achieving a dynasty ala the Bushes. And they're damaging their legacy and political future in the process.
Although I disagree with Clinton's rhetoric during the campaign, I support her decision to stay in the race. She provided opportunity for the most amount of Americans ever to have a genuine voice in electing the president. This is the most amount of states ever to have their specific issues publicized and discussed on the national stage. Even tiny West Virginia whose landside support of Clinton did not impact the overall math, earned a spotlight on its profound economic problems that are generally ignored by the rest of the country.
This primary season may be the most democratic moment ever for the Democratic party. We should not fear the right to vote. Instead of bashing a frontrunner for staying in the race, we should use this time to advocate for sensible reform in the primaries. It is ridiculous that New Hampshire and Iowa have the most amount of electoral power during the primaries. It is ridiculous that most states hold their elections long after the outcomes have been decided. Instead, the season should be shortened and regions of the country should vote together and then in succession. For example, in a clockwise direction perhaps starting with New England, followed by Mid-Atlantic states, etc until the nation has been covered. Then subsequent elections would begin in another region, continue clockwise (or counter-clockwise) until every American has a chance to cast a meaningful vote after a meaningful deliberation of the real issues that face this country.
It is possible that the perception about Clinton's damage to Obama will turn out to be needless worry. It is possible that he is the best candidate and that he will win in November even though Hillary Clinton summoned the worst of this country's innate racism to win her own race. It is possible that this country is better than the damaging rhetoric of Hillary Clinton's campaign. It is possible that November will be a chance for this country to demonstrate the best of itself after taking the most amount of time ever to deliberate and elect the best candidate.
Well, the best of the finalists. We can still improve on electing candidates who speak more clearly for regular Americans rather than for the highest bidders of the corporate interests who really run this show. Maybe we're getting there. But neither Clinton nor Obama is campaigning on single-payer, universal healthcare and for that reason I am disappointed in them both.
She's way too old for the Supreme Court. Choosing someone who is sixty instead of forty-five means giving away fifteen years of liberal votes.
This is a really crass suggestion, but could it be that she's just hanging around so she can fundraise for a few more weeks (and not spend much), thereby having less debt when she does end it in June?
